mastering resilience
Embracing obstacles and failures as an introverted leader
If I would have had a choice then I would have given a tight hug to all my obstacles & failures.
As leaders, our journey is often marked by obstacles and failures. Yet, it's in these moments of adversity that true growth and resilience are cultivated. Here are five ways introverted leaders can not only navigate obstacles but also thrive in the face of failure:
1. embrace humility over ego
Ego and pride can act as barriers to progress. It's essential to check our "me, me, me" mindset and embrace humility. Learning from obstacles requires a willingness to bow down to humility, acknowledging that every setback is an opportunity for growth.
2. foster a psychologically safe environment
As leaders, it's our responsibility to create a culture where failure is not feared but embraced as a stepping stone to success. Foster an environment where employees feel safe to speak up, share ideas, and take risks without the fear of punishment or humiliation.
3. challenge assumptions and refresh strategies
Obstacles arise when old methods stop working. Instead of viewing barriers as roadblocks, see them as opportunities to rethink, refresh, and challenge your base assumptions. It's not a reflection on your abilities but a chance to discover a better solution.
4. celebrate obstacles and learn from failures
Resilience is built by celebrating obstacles and learning from failures. Instead of worrying about being thick-skinned, focus on evolving and growing. Remember, evolution and growth require learning, adapting, and ultimately thriving in the face of adversity.
5. unlock emotional resilience
It's okay to shed a few tears when faced with failure. Suppressing emotions only prolongs the healing process. Allow yourself to momentarily experience strong feelings, as it can help lift the fog and pave the way for clearer thinking and renewed determination.
By adopting these practices, we can not only navigate obstacles but also emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before. In the words of Ryan Holiday (author Obstacle is the Way) “There is no good or bad without us, there is only perception. There is the event itself and the story we tell ourselves about what it means.”
